A compelling story-teller and talented author, Dr. Ken Dekleva is a former senior US physician-diplomat and Regional Medical Officer & Psychiatrist who served with the U.S. Dept. of State from 2002-2016 in Moscow, Vienna, London, Mexico City, and New Delhi. He also served in a leadership role as director of the U.S. State Department’s worldwide diplomatic mental health program.
He is currently the Professor of Psychiatry and Director, Psychiatry-Medicine Integration at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, TX. He's a Senior Fellow at the George HW Bush Foundation for US-China Relations.
Ken's teachings provide audiences with tools to understand risk during crises and negotiations, particularly in emerging / frontier markets in risk mitigation. He also presents actionable learnings around key leadership principles and senior management best practices.
He has published widely in the Journal of the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law, The Hill, The Cipher Brief, 38 North and The Diplomat, and has given numerous presentations in academic and U.S. government settings in the field of leadership analysis, including profiles of Xi Jinping, Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong-un. He has also given media interviews to CNN, National Public Radio, SpyTalk, the Burn Bag podcast, and Background Briefing.
He is also the author of the The Last Violinist and The Negotiator’s Cross.
